William ELLISON Farmer Cliffe
« on: Sunday 04 September 05 18:02 BST (UK) »

I am trying to find further details of this gentleman and his family.  He is listed in the Sancton Post Office Directory of 1857:

http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/ERY/Sancton/Sancton57Dry.html

But I have been unable to find him in the 1851 census of Cliffe and the surrounding area.  Any suggestions where to look next would be gratefully recieved.

Thanks

Hi Ed

Why not give what details you know of your relative and ask for an 1851 census look-up for the East Riding, just in case he's not where you expect him to be, not much help but that's what I would do.

good luck

Bee,

Thanks for replying - but I've given more or less what I know!  I'm looking for the father of George ELLISON born in Brotherton in 1843 - on his marriage certificate it lists his father as William Ellison (Farmer) and so I have been trying to track down William.  This man listed in Cliffe seems a reasonable person to exclude  - I have tried Ancestry, Family Search and the census for Cliffe to no avail.

Ed

I'm a bit confused about the Sancton bit and its connection with Cliffe (they're a far few miles apart.... however....

1851 Census for the Selby area two William Ellison's both Farmers

2351  Folio   141   Thorpe Willoughby (which is nearer to Brotherton)
2351  Folio  507    Cliffe  (I assume this is the one you couldnt see)

Hope this helps

Goughy,

Thanks very much for that information  - I'm sorry i have been slow to respond - I've just walked in the door from Paris.

I don't suppose you know if there is a son George with one or other of these Ellisons?

Thnaks again and best wishes

Hi Ed
Hope you had a good trip to Paris.  I've just had a look at the index and there is no George Ellison listed, and I had a look at the Census and he's not there.    I dont have the index for the Brotherton area so it would mean me scrolling through the census.  Did you get George's birth information from his birth certificate?  I cant seem to find him in 1861.

Hi Goughy,

I can't trace his birth!  His wedding certificate 23/10/1872 (Registry Office, Pontefract) gives age 29 years, living in Brotherton, marrying Elizabeth Chadwick, father William (a farmer).  He died in a pit accident at Fryston Collliery - death certificate  (01/07/1874)- says age 31 years - report of cornor's inquest adds no further deatails and I've not been able to trace any birth records nor any census records of george - hence attempting to trace him by his father William the farmer.

There is a possible george born the same year in Leeds - but i got the birth certificate and the father is wrong.

Ed

I think the fact he was living in Brotherton at the time of his marriage was more to do with his job than his place of birth.  I had a scroll through 1861 Census and picked out a William Ellison living in Walton (he's a Farm Labourer - born in Carlton), I've tracked him back to the 1851 Census and there was a George (son) living with him aged 6 born in Kirby ( think that would actually be South Kirkby).  William is some 20 years older than his wife Annis (?could be Annis is his mum and he was born from her first marriage?)  Probably be good to see if you can track when William and Annis married?

You may be better posting on the West Yorkshire board as this area is all around Wakefield/Barnsley/Doncaster etc

Thanks again - I did see that family but I thought the age of George was too far out (born 1845) to the ages on death and marriage certificates  - 1843 - but inh retrospect they both could be a little out and support a birth in 1844.

best wishes
