Does anyone know of any early 19th Century trade directories for Gateshead? I have checked the Historical Directories website but am wondering if there is anything else that I have missed.
On a totally different note, does anyone know if there was a Gateshead local paper that might have carried details of the 1854 Great Fire of Gateshead? My g grandfather was one of the walking wounded as a small child and there may well be mention of him or his injuries. I would have thought that sort of detail was more likely to be covered in a local paper.

Thanks for those links. Having done google searches on just about everr possible combination of words relating to hte Great Fire, I would say I have found just about everything on the web about it. I am now hoping to go one stage further through newspaper archives which is the reason for my question. I rather suspect that a visit to either Gateshead or Newcastle central library will be needed to go further on that trail.
Try the Newcastle papers too at Newcastle Central Library or Collingdale. The Illustrated London News also had an article on the fire on p 368 with a double page colour illustration of the fire.
