John Milroy

I'm looking for any information on my great-grandfather John Johnstone Milroy. We've heard we may have relatives in Australia but I've been unable to locate any wife or children. The trail ends after he went to Australia from Scotland a second time.
This is what I have:
John Johnstone Milroy was born February 8, 1864 on the Great Victoria steamship off Cape Horn. They were returning from Australia to Scotland. His birth was registered in Kirkcudbright, Scotland.
His parents are: James Milroy b. July 20, 1831 Kirkcudbright Scotland; d. July 1, 1901 Kirkcudbright, Scotland
Margaret Scarlett b. September 5, 1830 in Stornoway, Ross and Cromarty, Scotland; d. between Oct-Dec 1904 in Liverpool, England
They were married Dec 24, 1863 in Sandhurst, Victoria.
John Johnstone Milroy was sent to Australia sometime prior to or soon after April 1883. He returned to Scotland in 1885 or 1886, and then again sent to Australia prior to or soon after June 1887. I lose track of him at this point.
I am assuming he went to Victoria because his parents had been there for sometime before returning to Scotland. Also, he had an uncle, Thomas McClune Milroy, who spent most of his life in Bendigo, d. October 30, 1904 in Bendigo. However, he also had an uncle who made Melbourne his home. Peter Milroy d. July 6, 1871 in Melbourne and had been there for 15 years.
John Johnstone Milroy had two children born in Kircudbright. They are Albert Milroy, b. April 20, 1883, and Margaret Milroy, b. June 19, 1887. Their mother is Margaret Thomson, b. Dec 12, 1865 in Kirkcudbright.
If anyone has any information on John Johnstone Milroy, it would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, that is most likely him on his second trip. The family story has it that he did not return to Scotland after that trip. Is there any way to find out which port the Lisutania arrived at? Or would you have any tips on how to track him down once he settled in Australia?
Thank you

Hi milroy, As the passenger list that Trish found is located in Victoria, I imagine that John Milroy at least landed in Port Phillip/Melbourne on that date, and probably left the ship there (sometimes immigrants are listed at each port of call in the colony).
You can search Victorian BDMs at http://www.dvc.vic.gov.au/bdm.htm - they charge, but it's not too exorbitant, and I know for earlier records you can download straight from the site - not sure about the era you're interested in though.
There will be other people with much better information than I'm able to provide, so I'm sure they'll help you too.
Good luck!

Hi Milroy
I have checked the Victorian indexes, there is no reference to your John Milroy as far as I can tell.
With regards to the shipping record Trish found it is Victorian but the ship may only have stopped in Victoria on the way to another port.
I am going to the State Library on the weekend will check the fiche for you.
Cheers Genni

Hi Milroy As Genni noted, your man could have ended up in any state - probably eastern. I have many family on the Vic shipping lists who ended up in NSW or Qld. I will have a look on the Qld indexes (only to 1914 - later data is on fiche at LDS centres etc) for your man. NSW is online at www.bdm.nsw.gov.au - follow the family history link.

Sorry, but could find no record on your man in the Qld BDMs (to 1914) - but he could, of course married and/or died at a later time.
