I have been scanning the First World War records for a Frederick William Hudson and have come up with the following:
Hudson Frederick: age 18 : Carpenter Address and date of enrollment: Malvern, Victoria Father: Frederick Hudson, 9 Horace Street, Malvern, Victoria
Hudson Fred: 34 : Salesman Address and date of enrollment: Tarnbym Furnley St, Mt Lawley, W.A. Brother: James Hudson, 36 Fowler Street, Rowbarton, Taunton, Sommerset, England.
Hudson Frederick William: 21: Woolchaser Address and date of enrollment: Geelong East, Victoria Father W.H. Hudson, 394 Byrie Street Geelong East Victoria
While I have always thought my grandfather's place of birth was Sydney Australia, his marriage, certificate, death certificate and subsequent children's certificates just say Australia.
My knowledge is that he had a brother James, and a possible (illegitimate) brother Leonard. Heresay says his mother had an affair.
James apparently died fairly young, possibly in South Africa.
Frederick William was awarded medals in the 1914-1915 World War and I have copies of those in my possession.
If anyone could help me try and establish whether these Fredericks had brothers by the names of James and Leonard I would appreciate it.
Thank you Sharleen

Hi Sharleen
I don't know about the Frederick from WA but the other two appear to have died in Victoria. Have you asked for these records to be digitised on the National Archives website?
What are the medals he was awarded?
Cheers Genni

Hi Sharleen
The WA Fred is listed as having been born in England, so is unlikely to be your man. Are you sure the medals are Australian. Could he have enlisted in UK?

He earned three medals 1914-1915 Star to Private F W Hudson Victory Medal to Clr Sjt F W Hudson British War Medal to S/Sjt F W Hudson.
I can tell you that he married my grandmother on Sept 3, 1913 in Durban, South Africa.
On his death certificate it says:
Name of deceased: Frederick William Hudson Birthplace and Nationality of the deceased: Sydney Australia, British. Names & Addresses of the parents of deceased: Father : Deceased, Mother: Deceased. He was 59 years and 1 month when he died and the death certificate was dated 5 January 1945 which would then make him born December 5, 1886. My aunt gave me a date of November 20, 1887.
This was lodged in the Pietermaritzburg Deeds office in South Africa
Both my fathers and his sisters birth certificates list him as being born in Australia. His age was 43 in 1929 and 39 in 1925. This would give me an estimated year of birth as 1886.
There is a Frederick William Hudson born to a Frederick William Hudson and Louisa A Best in Ashleigh in 1886. There are 4 other children, Louie, Jennie M, Dorothy G, Marjorie L. All of the children except Marjorie were born in Ashleigh. Marjorie was born in Redfern.
However my mother is adamant that there was a brother James or Jim, as well as this other child Leonard, who was supposedly a half brother. Leonard I met personally, and he died in South Africa.
I did pick up a Leonard L Hudson born to an Ellen (assuming Hudson) in Redfern. Perhaps he was related to the other Hudsons, but that still leaves me missing Jim/Jame. He may in fact have been the illegitimate child of Ellen, sister to Fred Hudson snr. I may sound like I am clutching at straws here.
I am hoping that my mother will be sending over a whole lot of photos of Jim/James in two weeks time. Maybe they may have something on them. All she could tell me was that she thought he died young, and in South Africa.
I really want to thank you for responding because I am struggling so much with my grandfather right now. Just doing this exercise has made me think a bit outside the box.
Have a great day Sharleen

Hi Sharleen, The information on death certificates is only as good as the knowledge of the person giving the information - they may not know, or may have forgotten, his place of birth and so it's been recorded as Sydney when in fact it could have been somewhere else. Prue

Hi Sharleen
The medals your grandfather received were issued to members of the British Forces. Australia was part of the Dominion force and so was South Africa.
The 1914/15 Star was granted for service in 914 and 1915 in particular Military campaigns, none of the three you mentioned fit the time frame. There doesn't appear to be anyone in the Australian forces that fits the criteria.
The fact that your grandparents were married in South Africa in 1913 would suggest his enlistment took place in South Africa. Have you contacted the South African Archives to see if they have a service record for him.

Hi Gennie & Prue
Prue to answer your question my grandmother signed the death certificate, and given that she was born in Mackay Australia, I would imagine she would have knowledge of Sydney.
While I haven't found records of shipping lines from Australia to South Africa, I believe she may have been in her teens when she traveled out.
Gennie I will look on the SA gov site for service records. Thanks for your advice.
