John COLLIER (c 1816) - WISBECH Cambridgeshire.
« on: Sunday 11 September 05 19:49 BST (UK) »

Can anybody help to find information on this elusive chap ?

On the Camb FHS website there is a Baptism in 1816 of a John Collier from Leverington whose father was Joseph and mother was Mary.

I know for definite that the chap I'm interested in married Mahala SMITH on 14 Dec 1845 because I have the certificate.  It gave his age as 28 and his fathers name as Joseph and his residence was stated as Leverington Road, Wisbech St. Peter.

I couldn't find him in Wisbech in the 1841 census although he was there in 1851.  He was no where to be seen in the 1861 and 1871 censuses even though children to Mahala were still being produced.  Again there was no sign of him in the 1881 and 1891 censuses but he may have died by this time.  His wife Mahala whoever, can be found on all the census returns bar the 1901.

Can anyone point to sources of reference or provide information to unlock my blockage.  Any help fully appreciated.

Hi dcsnr,

Welcome to RootsChat  Smiley Smiley

One point of interest:  I also have ancestors from Wisbech, and sometimes they appeared on the CAMBRIDGE census and sometimes on the NORFOLK census.

Have you tried both ??

Just in case you don't know them, here are two useful Sites for Wisbech:

Wisbech and the Fenlands
http://contueor.com/wisbech/
and
Norfolk Transcription Archive

Good luck,
Bob
