The first big waves of migration from UK to NZ were anywhere from the 1840's through 1860's and later. The european population in NZ before then would have been very small. If this family did arrive before then, I'd suspect they were involved in whaling/sealing or perhaps some sort of UK government official or explorer.
Are you able to specify the individuals you are looking for, names or initials, ages, where they lived or died, etc. Several CRICHTON and CREIGHTONS travelled to NZ ports via Melbourne between 1861-65, and the Otago Nominal Index has several references as well.
