If Thomas Butler could be from North Berkshire, the Oxfordshire Baptism Index (http://searches.oxfordshirefhs.org.uk/) has the following entry :-

Thomas BUTLER, son of Henry & Mary, baptised Chilton in 1742

Oxfordshire FHS has transcribed and index the Chilton parish register. It is available on CD from http://www.ofhs.org.uk/CDsales.html. Alternatively, the transcription is freely available at the Centre for Oxfordshire Studies and the Oxfordshire Record Office. The transcription might well give additional information over and above that taken from the index.
