1901 CENSUS Head of Household at 3 Years old???
« on: Monday 12 September 05 15:04 BST (UK) »

Not too sure were to put this so thought this would be best place. If anyone is using Ancestry's free Sept look ups of 1901  please be  aware that some of the birthdates are way out. I know it says born about, but I have just been checking up on info I have for my Great Grandad  and thought he had possibly died by 1901. The reason was that yes, Grin Grin there was a Charles Edwards but the d.o.b. given was 1897 (would have fitted in nicely with the children in the family!) until I looked a little further and it said HEAD of household Grin Grin.I know they sent children to sweep chimneys at an early age then, but to be a head of household at three years old, is a bit much Grin. Charles was actually born in 1858 so not just a few years out here Huh. This is not the first time I have seen this type of error from the 1901, one of the others in my tree had a big discrepancy in d.o.b too.  Roll Eyes

I have a feeling I read somewhere that they have mis-transcribed the heads of household Huh

If you would like me to check out the actual Census sheet let me know the reference, or his full name and place of birth I'll happily do that for you

Thanks for the offer Wendi, what I was doing  was just updating info from 1881 to 1901 on all the families I have in my tree ( over 550 individuals at last count Wink ) whist its free Grin. My first tangle with the pay for 1901 saw me spending an age looking up one of hubby's ancestors that was not only transcribed with the wrong first name but a miss- spelling of the surname too Cry
I have quite a bit of info on my Edwards part of tree so at least I was able to notice the problem. It does make me wonder though if this is why I have been unable to find my mums parents and first child in the 1901, I have been looking for Madeline Murray b 1881 Liverpool, her husband Henry(also known as John)b 1881 Liverpool and their son Harry b1900 without any success at all. I wonder if they decided to leave the country instead of filling the census in Cheesy.
If you have time and can have a look for those two it would be great, I can only say that they were probably in Liverpool in 1901 they didn't move over to The Wirral until my aunt was born in 1905.

Good on ya CatOne, did it again Wink

Toad, that's a wonderful photo although it looks as if Madeline had a "bad eye".  Bless her, my Dad was blind in one eye, guess it was not so bad, but, WHAT I am trying to day is if you would like the creases etc "sorted out" in the photo, try posting in on the Photograph Restoration pages under "The Common Room"......you won't beleive what they can do !!!!

Best Wishes,
Wendi

Hi Wendi,
I only got that photo a few weeks ago, had never seen a picture of my Nan (mums side) as she died when I was a baby. I was really confused when I saw the eye and thought it was a stain on the picture, but my cousin told me that Nan had fat splashed in her eye and it went into a cataract. It was odd because my Great Nan on my dads side was also blind in that eye, she had an accident at work. My hubby has done some correcting on the photo now and I have a nice one that has been put to A4 size with both eyes normal Grin
