Some scanners have settings buttons showing in the dialogue box you can click on before you start the scan - when you "preview" and select the area you want to scan does it look ok at that point or is it still "pale"? Have you set it approproately as to whether is is a  photo or document?
After you have scanned you may still need to open the graphic in something like Photoshop, PhotoElements, or Graphic Converter to adjust the "levels" etc. Sometimes just using the Auto Levels and Auto contrast buttons will tune it sufficiently, but otherwise its a case of experimenting with the adjustments.

Hi Sue,
Unless there is a fault with the scanner(unlikely)
It will scan exactly what it sees. Take a quick print and
compare it with the original. Don't forget your monitor is
like your T.V set. You can adjust the brightness, contrast
etc. Even basic scanners normally can capture a decent
representation of the original. If after adjusting your monitor
the scan still looks bright let us know and we'll start to dig deeper.
Tomkin.
P.S I don't know why but I always have my screen too light.

  Sue ,
I was suggesting that you check your monitor
brightness first.Just like the t.v. you can alter the brightness
& contrast of the image on the screen.Once you have done that,
if your problem still exists, we shall look else where.
Out of interest, what is the make & model of your scanner?

Tomkin.
