Hello, I'm seeking Baptism details for CAROLINE HAYTER at ELLINGHAM on 13/Jul/1803 (According to the IGI). What I really need to know is:- a) Her Mother's maiden name (SARAH?) b)Which Parish both parents were from? (JOHN & SARAH) If anybody can help, it would be much appreciated. Regards, Alan.

Hi Alan,
I'm afraid that in 1803 the details you are looking for were probably not recorded in the register. It was only with the introduction of pre-printed registers from 1813 onwards that you will find an idea of where the parents lived. Before this there may be an indication of a place of abode e.g a farm or certain part of the parish, but it is not guaranteed. Even after 1813, you may not find her mother's maiden name recorded either - it depends on the person who enters the information in the register.
Looking at the IGI the entry you have found is a patron submitted record and so it is always advised that you should proceed with caution and verify any information against the original. It is possible that John was married as John Short Hayter to Sarah Brown 5 Nov 1793 in Harbridge, Hampshire, a neighbouring parish. This is also a patron submitted record, so be doubly cautious, but it may give you a clue about where to look for confirmation. John Short Hayter was buried in Harbridge aged 72 6 Nov 1840. There are lots of Hayter burials in Harbridge, but only 1 in Ellingham up to 1837.
Hope this helps.
Nell

Hello Katherine, Thanks for making contact. It seems that there was a very large number of Hayter family members in & around Hampshire during the 1700s & 1800s. Jon Baker has a very good website at :- www.vectisjon.com which includes many of them - well worth checking. Eling / Toton is about 15miles away from Ellingham, the other side of the New Forest. However, there may still be a connection. Good luck with your research, Regards, Alan.
