Daniel McGowan or McGown, Campbeltown
« on: Thursday 10 August 06 16:34 BST (UK) »

Trying to find the birth details of Daniel McGowan, spelt McGown in some documents (e.g. his marriage certificate).  He married Barbara Sinclair in Campbeltown on 9 Jun 1870 and was recorded as aged 24.  He died in Campbeltown on 21 Dec 1902, aged 54 and from that death certificate his parents were Daniel McGowan and Jane (or Jean) Smith.

The 1851 census shows his parents in Campbeltown and his age is given as 5, born in Campbeltown.  In contrast, the 1861 census - also in Campbeltown - shows his birthplace as Glasgow, but at least his age is consistent at 15.  From the 1871 census onwards, his age varies a year or two each time, but he consistently records his birthplace as Campbeltown.

Despite all this info, I have been unable to find his birth record - can you experts do better?    Smiley

Hi Iain

I am interested in Daniel McGowan or McGowan, Campbelltown.  The family names: Norman, Barbara and Daniel figure in my family too.

My nan was born in Scotland around 1915 (forgive me as I have only just started on this branch today!) Emily McGowan,  born about 1914/5 her siblings were as follows:

Daniel
Norman
Jean
Barbara

My father has no idea of who his grandparents were (unhelpful!) but I know that the family moved to England circa 1920's.

I know that they had links to Mull and that my nan was born in Campbelltown.

It's a long shot but hoping you may be able to help.

Hi Sue, thanks for your message.  Unfortunately, I have found no record of any Emily McGowan in my notes on the McGowan branch of the family.
To the best of my knowledge, only 2 members of the family left Scotland for England - Daniel McGowan born 1921 in Campbeltown, and his family, and also another Daniel (gets confusing) who was born in Campbeltown in 1870, married Margaret Bryden in 1895 and later moved to England (possibly St Annes?).  He was a baker.
Maybe you can find the birth information of Emily and that certificate will give you the names of her parents.
Good hunting

Iain & Sue,
My grandmother was Isabella McGowan. My mother Isabella had sisters Mary & Barbara and brother Daniel. Daniel married Alice and at some time in the 50s/60s moved to Corby, Northants. I guess you are therefore cousins or second cousins. I have more connections back through the line--although I am just about to put these together on a family tree. i note your last entries on rootschat waas some time ago--but if you pick this up let's swap notes.

Good to hear from you Harborough.
Your mother Isabella was the sister of my mother, Barbara.   I am happy to share my info on the McGowan line.  Hopefully, you can fill in some of the data I am missing, and I can give you some info if you are missing it.  I have data going back to the early 1800's, although some are just names - frustrating isn't it.
Mabe you could give me your website address and then we can exchange info, or we can do it via our email addresses - whichever you prefer

Hi Iain,
You must be cousin Iain Taylor, son of Barbara and Bill. I'm your cousin Alexander, son of Bella & Alex. Must be 30 to 40 years ago since we last met---disgraceful isn't it!!
I think it would be great to get in touch--not only for the genealogy but just to catch up on family news. My e-mail address is gee.scott@talktalk.net. It will be interesting to see how far you have traced the family line. I have concentrated a lot on the Scott side, but have some on the McGowan side---interesting to know that few were true Campbeltonians--lots of immigrants to the town from other parts of Scotland.Did you keep in touch with Sue talbot. I wondered if she was a grandaughter of Dan & Alice.
E-mail me your address then we can talk more.
