« on: Monday 12 September 05 21:09 BST (UK) »

Tracing my McGillivray & McCalman family tree at the moment.  They came from Gruinart, Kilchoman & Kilarrow in Islay.

anyone else researching?

Hi

I'm not researching Islay but I have come across this site: http://freepages.family.rootsweb.com/~tlarson/bdm/ which has a huge amount of BMD and census data for Islay.

Regards.

Monica

Added: I've had a quick look on Scotlands People, the official BMD and census site which is pay to view at http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/  I had a quick search for Duncan m*cgil*v* in the 1871 Census and got one 8 year old in Kilarrow, Argyll (there were only two boys of that name for the whole of Argyll and the other is aged 10-15). If you view, you could get the whole family group including where everyone was born if shown.  You could also try searching for Duncan birth cert. there.  I found only two entries for Duncans for the period of 1860-70 in Argyll, one in 1862 and the other in 1867, not in Kilchoman.

Have been looking at McGilvrays in Bowmore so this might just help.  My Great Uncle John Stewart Dewar married Mary Ann McGilvray in 1847 in Islay.  Her parents were Malcolm McGilvray (customs comptroller) and Ann MacMillan.  John Stewart Dewar was an artist and they moved to Glasgow by 1850 where their second child was born.  The 1851 census then finds JSD in Norfolk as a boarder along with his brother in law Hugh McGilvray (customs inspector).  Mary Ann died at Broomhill Hospital in 1855 and JSD at Acharn, Perthshire in 1890.   I have been unable to trace their whereabouts in between these dates or if any children survived.  The spelling of McGilvray changes frequently.  Any info would be most welcome.
