immigration Mary Townsend to America help please

I'm in Australia and have very little knowledge of U.S. records.
On looking at the shipping entry into Australia of Thomas Brophy and his wife Mary Townsend I found the following information
"Arrived at Moreton Bay settlement aboard the "Genghis Khan" on the 18 Aug 1854 with his three children and wife Thomas age 37 , Mary age  29 .
occupation -farm labourer.
from Kilkenny
neither read nor write,
parents John and Catherine, both dead,
religion -Roman Catholic.
Mary Brophy could read ,
parents - John and Mary Townsend, mother in America.

How would I go about finding a Mary Townsend who went to America before 1854?

Hi

Your search will be difficult - it seems a common name and you don't have a good idea of an immigration year. I took a little look in the 1850 and 1860 census for USA but there are too many to sort without more details Sad

Maybe this site will help give you ideas, there are indexes to passenger lists to be found and with any luck this site can steer you in the right direction
