Forest Gate Dist School 1881

I've found someone in this institution in 1881. There are several pages of boys and girls aged 4 to 16 all seemingly born in Poplar all described as Scholars.

Does anyone know what this place was? ie workhouse/orphanage ? Can't seem to find a mention of it anywhere.
Any ideas welcome...

) seriously, I don't recognise either of those names.
When was this? I do have a couple of male Davis around 1900 who I can't go any further with

Our lot were all from Poplar/Blackwall/Greenwich.

would have been around 1890-1900 no exact dates waiting for certs to verify what i think i know

this would have been my maternal nans parents nan was born 1920 she was born

and married in westham not that far from where yours are!!

No, sorry donna they don't ring any bells, Walter is'nt one of the names that crops up in my lot.

There were several unrelated Davis families in the area, I did'nt realise how many till I came to look for mine.

Hi Suey do you have the address of the institution that you are looking for, There is a Convent School in Forest Gate, St Georges Road. Many years ago it was a boarding school for children.

Hi ragdollrosie - thanks for taking an interest in this.

I'm pretty sure now that this was an orphanage or something similar. Had a look again at the first couple of pages, 29 in all, no road or street name given simply Forest Gate District School, West Ham. The staff range from attendants, drillmasters, gardeners, schoolmistresses, needlewomen, cooks and domestics. All the girls have been given Poplar as place of birth.

The Mary Burns I have there should have had parents and at least one sibling none of whom have been found yet anywhere, so she is still in the Huh

pile of notes.
