Challenor Family
« on: Wednesday 11 August 04 12:42 BST (UK) »

Help!
Is there anyone who can help me find a group of very elusive ancestors who originated in Staffordshire but went on to live in Cheshire?
The family were earthenware dealers/hawkers/travellers who ended up in the  Hyde, Newton, Stockport area of Cheshire.
The earliest was a William Challenor, his son Richard was born about 1819 in Stafford (possibly the town). William probably had at least 2 other children Martha and Enoch.
Richard had 3 children Mary born Hazel Grove area 1856, Simeon born 1858 and Enoch born 1859.
The names Enoch and Simeon are quite unusual so if anyone has come across similar Challenors I would be very interested and extremely grateful for any details.

Hi Nicky,
many thanks for the information.
Richard Challenor is the correct person as Jemima the wife of Simeon, who isn't present on the census list, was my 2x great grandmother.
The Simeon on the census is surprisingly not the Simeon who was the son of Richard. His age is close to that of Richard's son and all I can think is that the father of the Simeon in Macclesfield was possibly the brother of Richard and they had a close family member called Simeon. Possibly a father or brother. At one time I did wonder if the two Simeon's were the same person and he was a bigamist. However they were born in different years and their seperate births registered as such. I do think there is a link though.
Many thanks again,
Jean

Hi Jean,

I thought this site might be interesting, as I found it whilst looking for some of my Grosvenor rellies in Staffordshire.

Hi Tony,

thank you for the link to the pottery site.
It certainly made me think as from about 1840 onwards the family through two generations were earthenware dealers / hawkers. I wonder which pottery company in Staffordshire they used?

Regards

Hi Jean,

I think you will find that they were trading as a Earthenware manufacturer from 1842 till 1892.  Have a look around that site, there is lots of info on them and where they lived.
