Please could someone see if they can find the following people on the 1841 & 51 Woolwich Census for me.
John Edward Joseph Newnham b. abt 1811 Rochester Frances Mezaler Newnham b. abt 1811 Chelmsford Essex
They were married in 1833 in Chatham As far as I know they had 2 children (John & Robert) before moving to Woolwich where their daughter Frances was born in May 1841.
I have found most of this family (& subsequent children) on later census returns, with the exception of son John, who is proving to be very elusive! He married Sarah Ann Sweeney (1858 Woolwich) and they had two children John (1861) & Catherine (1862). He then died sometime between 1862 & 1868 (when Sarah remarried). But they don't appear to be on the 1861 census, like the rest of the family!!!
Thanking you in advance Barbara

Hello Barbara and Carol,
I just did a search on the name Mezaler and Google came up with your message about John Newnham and Frances Mallery. These are my direct ancestors and I have been researching them recently.
They had 10 children as far as I can find out and the family appears in all the censuses from 1841 to 1881, living in Woolwich and Plumstead - I haven't checked the 1891 and 1901 censuses yet.
The information about John Newnham helps me fill in a gap. He seems to have been born in 1835 and the birth was registered in Charlton, Kent (now London, of course). I am fairly sure he was the first child. My ancestor was Reuben Newnham who I am pretty sure was the last, being born in 1855.
If you need information about the rest of the family, please let me know.
I would like to get information about John and Frances. Like you I know they were born about 1810 or 1811 - John in Rochester and Frances in Springfield, Colchester, Essex.
Hoping to hear from you.
Regards,
Gerry

Hi Gerry and Barbara, Not sure if you've found these entries on the cityark website
http://cityark.medway.gov.uk/
Baptism Registers of Rochester St Margarets (1783 - 1812) Image 113 May 17 1809, William Henry James Newnham son of William and Ann born April 11th
Image 119 March 17 1811, John Edmund Joseph Newman son of William and Ann born Feb 9th (could be 19th)
Although the two surnames are spelled differently, they probably relate to the same family. Hope this helps with the research, xx Carol
