Heres a quick try at an enhancement. I'm sure others with more time will be able to get a much cleaner result.

You've probably already thought of this, but have you tried writing to the paper to see if they have a copy of the picture. I know my local paper has a photo ordering service for pictures appearing in it.

Unfortunely  the  newpaper  office  and  many  records  were  burned  in  a  fire   so I'm  lucky  to  have  this.

Hello gransworld,
What a lovely picture!  When was it taken?
I have cleared it up a bit...

Apologies to all those opposed to colourising, but I was a bit bored

(That wallpaper was a bit of a nightmare to colour)

Might be able to sharpen the eyes up a bit, the dog is flat on the image.
But with a tweak around the eyes, like a bit of white to show reflection, could make the difference.

kizmiaz, your attention to detail paid off.  The coloring looks fabulous!

For the best possible restoration: Scan at 300dpi • full color (even B&W's) • save with as little jpeg compression as possible.

Gransworld

I've been having a bit of a play with this, and this is what has started to emerge from the hidden depths of the image.

Is this anywhere near? Its very difficult to make out what is noise and what is picture with this sort of image, but this is as close as I could get to what I think is there. (It's also very difficult to tell where exactly the wrinkles are, because I've never worked on a centenarian face before)

I thought I'd give him a bit of a rejuvenation for his 100th birthday  Wink

Actually, you're right, it does look like that. I cloned away a bit too much of the age, so I've had to add some back. There is still a lot of work to do on the mouth though, its way too smooth for my liking.

Well, this is about all I can do for the face.

This is the same colour picture as above, but with the slightly enhanced head layered on and coloured to give more definition. I may still be able to get some more info from the hands, but I don't think I'll do anything to the rest of the image. After all, its the gentleman in the middle who is the focus of the image, and I don't think the rest actually looks that bad really.

Hope this is okay.
