Marriage of Oswald Meggison and Mary R???, before 1887

Mary R or May B (hard to read) emigrated with Oswald in 1887 to New York with son William.  Trying to find marriage.  Mary was 24 , William was born in 1882 but may be Mary's stepson.  Suspect marriage after 1882.

Hi,
   I looked on Ancestry and I found the following marriage entry:
Sept 1876 Sunderland 10a 688 Oswald Meggison

1881 Census
38 East St, Bishopwearmouth
Oswald Meggison Head aged 25 Labourer born Sunderland
Jane Meggison Wife aged 24 born Sunderland

Could Jane have died and Oswald remarried making William Mary's stepson?
