I am looking for the occupation and place of residence, on 1851 census for Derbyshire,of John Cholerton, born Chaddesden around 1820. His wife was called Ann, born either Huntingdonshire, or Beverley (She didn't seem to know for certain) their children at that time were William aged 2 and John about 1. At the time of his marriage in East Yorks. in 1847 he is entered on the cert.as what looks like "Butler" in Middleton on the Wold, and on the 1861 census he is a waiter, possibly in his brothers pub,in Chaddesden. and on the 1871 census he is a farmer of 4 acres also in Chaddesden. Any help very welcome. Many thanks Sheila.

Many many thanks for that, as it confirms he was a Butler, which is rather indistinct on his marriage cert, and his young age acording to some, made him too young to be a Butler, which was usually an older man who had worked his way up through the household..another myth it seems. I can now start to find where in Middleton in the Wold he worked. Thankyou once again. Sheila

I did note that the person next door was a coach man at Hazelwood, so they may have been part of the same household team, but not shore were Hazelwood Hall ?

The smallholding of John Cholerton was in my family until circa 1950. It was too small to support more than one family so each generation had to wait upon the death of the previous one (Robert 1774-1853) There is a good description of it in the 1910/15 Valuation Office Survey and the accompanying map pinpoints it's precise position in the village. I am John's Gt Gt granddaughter and I understood he had been a page at Chaddesdon Hall, not the butler. His wife's father moved from Hunts. to Yks when Ann was a child. He was a wheelwright John died in 1880. The Cholerton's have been in Chaddesden since the beginning of the Parish Register., probably since Chad had his den there.
