Place Name Moray
« on: Wednesday 14 September 05 10:27 UTC (UK) »

I have been lucky to find a Bounty Emigration Passenger list for the ship Asia in 1839. Elizabeth Munro (Macrae) has Moray Ross and Cromarty has her native place. Is there a Moray in Ross and Cromarty?A google search brings it up as a county. Also OldNairn was mentioned
Thanks Keera

Hi Keera,

There is a Moray on the A830 road to Mallaig - do you think this might be the Moray you're looking for?

If you look at a map of Scotland and find the Isle of Skye, Morar is on the mainland just to the south east.

If it is, it's absolutely beautiful. It's a tiny bay with pure white sand. I have some photos I took last year and can send you some, just get in touch by PM and send me your e-mail address.

Morar is in what used to be the county of Inverness, not in what used to be Ross and Cromarty

Hi keera,

Do you have the full details of what it says where these places were mentioned?

One boundary of the county of Ross and Cromarty was Moray Firth ...

I see that you have
Munro Macrae (Dingwall Scotland)
in your list of interests - and Dingwall was in Ross & Cromarty.

Is Elizabeth the following extracted entry in the IGI?
Elisabeth MACRAE m Donald MUNRO, 11 Jul 1812, Dingwall
And there are several children in Dingwall to parents of these names - all recorded submitted by a member of the LDS.

Have you looked at the film of the marriage at your local LDS Family History Centre - perhaps (a long shot) it might give a more specific place for where she came from e.g. the name of a farm?

JAP and Forfarian,

I completely went off on a tangent on this thread and read Moray as Morar and probably completely confused poor Keera.

I fell in love with the place (Morar) and I think I had one of those little 'senior moments'

(That's my excuse anyway!)

It's a good job you guys are picking up on dumplings like me!

Thank you to everyone who took the time to answer my question. I have left the Scottish link for a while and concentrated on the English ones. Yes Jap the IGI entry is the one I am researching. I will try the LDS but I have not had any luck lately with them being open! Thanks again
