Hi,
I'm looking for the Savage family who I believe lived in Stilton. Charles Savage and Elizabeth Padder married in 1828 at Stilton. They have a daughter Jane Savage born about 1836 and she states that she was born in Alconbury Weston. I have the 1841 Alconbury and Alconbury Weston census and the family is not living there at that time, thanks, Ruth

Sorry Ruth, I'm afraid I couldn't see any Savages or Padders in Stilton. I also looked for Savages in Sawtry, as there seemed to plenty of them in 1861, but whilst there quite a few in 1841 no Charles though
Regards
David

Hi Ruth
I've found Jane Savage in 1851
HO107/1748 folio 477 Union Workhouse, Huntingdon St John William Savage pauper 20 Farm lab born Stilton Jane Savage pauper 14 Scholar in UW b Stilton
I can't find either parent in 1851
They weren't in Huntingdon workhouse in 1841.
Regards

Hi David,
Thanks for that I think Charles Savage must have died in 1842 or 1843 because he is listed on the free bmd for those dates. Jane had a brother called Charles so I assume one of the deaths relates to him. I think that Janes mother died in 1836 at Stilton which was the year that Jane was also born. I guess the father might have taken the family to live with relatives after the death of his wife. That just leaves them to find in 1841, thanks, Ruth

I've checked the 1841 census for Ramsey and there is a William Savage working at Great White. He's shown as being 15 when he should be 11 but that might be him. I've also checked the 1841 census for Broughton, Great Raveley, Little Raveley, Woodwalton, Offord Cluny, Offord Darcy, Bury, Upwood, Wistow, Great Stukeley, Little Stukeley, Alconbury and Alconbury Weston and I haven't found Charles and his family on any of them, Ruth

I've managed to find a William Savage on the 1861 census and he is living at Sawtry. I wonder if this is where the family are living in 1841?

I managed to get the death certificate for Charles Savage and it shows that he was living at Upton sub district of Sawtry in 1842. He was 52 when he died, Ruth

Hi Ruth
I've gone through Upton very slowly, line by line (there's only half a dozen pages) and while it's very faint and patchy I think this might be him
HO107/451-11 folio 5B Upton Edmond Smitton 75 Farmer Illegible Smitton (female) 60 very faint Char..Savage (male) 45 ag lab William Savage 70 ag lab (very clear apart from down loop of the g) Charles Falkner 35? ag lab All born in county
Was his father William??
Slightly odd that William wasn't just listed as William ditto, but probably a good thing as I'm not sure I would have picked up the name Savage from Charles alone.
I see Origins.net now has an indexed Hunts on it's site, so doubtless I will now be going the way of the dinosaurs!
Regards, and a very merry Christmas
David

Hi David,
I've looked at the copy of the 1841 census on the Origins site and I'm sure it is Charles Savage. I don't know the name of his father because he's not mentioned on the parish records of Stilton at the time of the 1828 wedding. Charles did have a son called William so I guess he might have named him after his father. The only William b1830 of the right age on the 1841 census was the 15 year old working as a servant in Ramsey so I guess that is the son. As for Jane there is just the one 3 year old and she is in Somersham, listed as a daughter of the family. It's obviously one of those family lines that just goes nowhere, thanks, Ruth
