George Henry Ford
« on: Wednesday 14 September 05 13:29 BST (UK) »

Am looking for my grandfather's brother George Henry Ford, born Wolverhampton in 1859.
I cannot find him on any census after 1881, but know he was alive in 1888 when his father made his will.   I have not found a death either despite having search the registers thoroughly.
My sister remembers being told that someone in the family (the black sheep!)went to Australia and became a political minister there, so I'm wondering if it was George as he's the only one I can't find.
The only other thing I know is that two of his cousins went to Brisbane on board the Renfrewshire (from Liverpool) in October 1883 arriving January 1884.
Any advice would be much appreciated.  This is going to be like looking for a needle in a haystack I know, but really would love to track him down.

Hi Dave

Do you have the names of his parents - most indexes in Oz include these.

Trish

If he did become a politician he should be reasonably easy to find. I did a google search of Oz govt sites without much success.

The only record I found that could relate to your man is this one

Ford George Henry  marriage Sarah Ann Unwin 27 Nov 1880  1880/ 000144

This is looking at Qld BDM CD which goes to 1914.

Hi Trish

Thanks for your reply.

His parents were Edward Ford and Sarah Ann Hartill.
He was still living with his parents in 1881 so the marriage you've found can't be the right one unfortunately.

I did look at a couple of sites myself for Australian politicians, but they only seemed to list the most famous.

Unfortunately this is all so vague - I realise I may never find him!

Thanks again

1903/1931
FORD      GEORGE H
Father: EDWARD
Mother: SARAH A
Registered: PARRAMATTA

The NSW registry is here:

You can buy the certificate online for $22 Aust.

Good find in NSW. Just to note - you can buy a transcript of the certificate for $15 - not a legal document, but usually all that is required for family history. Contains all the same information as the certificate.

Goodness I'm amazed!  Thank you Leonie.  I do hope it's him.

Trish - where can I buy a transcript of the certificate from?

Many thanks

Always takes a while to find them on the bdm site

http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/familyHistory/howToSearch.htm#TranscriptionAgent

I use Laurence Turtle but I think they all charge the same amount

Hi Trish, Leonie

I just wanted to let you know that I got the transcription for George Henry Ford and it is my grandfather's brother!  He married and had eight children, some of whom had very strange names such as Cyprian and Osmond!

His occupation was 'Retired Senior Attendant' but I've no idea what that could be.  Do you have any ideas by any chance?

Anyway, thank you so much for your help with this.  I'd never have found him otherwise.

Hi Dave

Just love the good outcomes  Grin  Grin  Grin Many thanks for letting us know - much appreciated.

Given that you initially thought he had a political career - it could be that he was an "attendant" at the NSW Parliament.  Senior attendant would be a good public service position name  Grin  Grin

Given that you have the names of the children, if you search the NSW bdm site
www.bdm.nsw.gov.au - you should find any births until 1905 and marriages and deaths until 1945.

I found this page on the NSW parliament site
http://www.parliament.nsw.gov.au/prod/web/common.nsf/key/ArchivesWelcomeTheCollection

They have an archives and it appears to contain details of staff. I'm not sure how one searches these records (or where they are) - so will leave you to browse.

Hi Trish

Have had a look at that site - couldn't find him on any of the listings, but they were for members of Parliament so he probably wouldn't be there.  Am going to e-mail the archives and see if they can give me some information - nothing ventured, nothing gained!

Have found all but one of his children's births - that was 1906 - and think I'm now getting quite adept at using the NSW bdm site.  The names stated on the death certificate don't match the registered names, eg Hartill (on dc) = Constance S H, Stafford (on dc) = Cyprian S D, Jack = George W J and Daphne = Gertrude D L!!!!  I've also found George's marriage, his wife's birth and three of the children's marriages.

Thanks once again

Hi Dave

If you want the 1906 index entry post a query with the name & parent names. The NSW CD goes to about 1918 & a few of the rootschatters have access to same. I can get to it at my library but don't have my own copy.

Do let us know if your man worked at the parliament!!

One of my families (7 daughters) called them all by "pet" names which had little relationship to the registered names - this is just to confuse us  Grin  Grin

You may like to check if any of your folks served in WWI or II

Trish, you've done it again and pointed me to more info.

Have just looked at the National Archives and have come up with the following for WW1:

Ford Jack George POB Parramatta POE Hurstville NOK F Ford George
Ford Stafford Drayton POB Parramatta POE Sydney NOK F Ford George Henry

Pretty sure both of these are ours.  Stafford Drayton certainly is - George Henry must have been homesick when he was born, Staffordshire is his county of birth and he grew up on Drayton Street!  Cyprian Stafford Drayton - poor child!

Another thing I'd like to investigate is that there was a Magisterial Inquiry into George Henry's death - cause of death was 'concussion of the brain due to an accidental fall accelerated by paralysis'.  Any ideas if/where information on inquiries might be available?

Will keep you posted as I find out more.

Cheers
