I can get on Rootschat okay - obviously - but I can't get on Familysearch, or the 1901 census (or ebay, come to that). I know I have a slowish dial-up connection, but I've not experienced this before. What's up?

On occasion ISPs have "peering" or DNS problems - this is when they can't link to other areas of the internet, these problems are usually VERY short lived. Have you contacted your ISP?
Try and connect to family search using this for now, see if it works:

I'm on broadband - got into both 1901 and Family search with no trouble. I went over from dial up because I had so many problems, even when I could get on to sites everything was either painfully slow or 'timed out'

All census lookups are Crown Copyright from www.nationalarchives.gov.uk Sussex - Knapp. Nailard. Potten. Coleman. Pomfrey. Carter. Picknell Greenwich/Woolwich. - Clowting. Davis. Kitts. Ferguson. Lowther. Carvalho. Pressman. Redknap. Argent. Hertfordshire - Sturgeon. Bird. Rule. Claxton. Taylor. Braggins.
Trystan's link doesn't work either. On all these sites it gets halfway with a blank screen and just stays there. I suspect it is a problem with my ISP but there's no point in telling them. We're stuck here with KC, who have a monopoly. That's why I won't go to broadband when there's no choice. They don't have to provide a decent service because there's no competition. I'll do what I need to do at work tomorrow. Thanks for the input.

It may be worth contacting your ISP, as Kingston Communication may have a local problem to your street.

If it's still a problem tomorrow I'll make waves. But why would I be able to get onto some sites and not others?

1.All ISP's servers hold a cache of the pages visited during a certain period by their users .... in this way any lookup request for these pages is generally pretty quick. Its only when you start asking for pages which are not in the cache that the slowdowns can occur. (this can also cause problems when you update your own webspace on these servers as they can take up to 24 hours to renew their cache of pages)
2. Number of users on at any one time
3. limited facilities leading to No. 2 .... which becomes a vicious circle.
4. poor lines ...... causing disruption to the signal
