i've tried and i've tried but no matter what permatations i put into my search i cannot find them in england or scotland in 1851.

no doubt you have them living in somerset in 1861?

1861 census; wraxhall, somerset

william...head...age 41...glass maker...born newcastle
ellen...wife...age 35...born scotland
john...son...age 13...born scotland (30/7/1848 dumbarton)
james r...son...age 9...born scotland (28/5/1851 dumbarton)
william...son...age 7...born somerset

so ellen was pregnant with james when the census was carried out, but where was she??

Thanks Joe
Yes found the 1861 awhile ago. Isn't it funny how people & families appear & disappear at will from life as we know it  or dont appear at all but we know they existed. Next will try the varied spellings of Semple / Sample etc and see what turns up.
All the best
