A file read error has occurred
« on: Thursday 15 September 05 18:32 BST (UK) »

I have the Sussex 1861 census on disc.

On disc 5 (Lewes & Brighton Reg. Dists) is document RG9 596.

I open "My Computer"; click on Drive E and then click on pdf RG9 596.  This is the message I get:

There was an error opening this document.  A file read error has occurred.

How do I deal with this error please?  I know from the street index that the families I seek are on 596.

TIA

Try exiting the census disk

Remove disk - check to see if any dirty

reinstall in disk drive.

Re open census details

Jinks

It you dont close before inserting a new disk it still
thinks you are reading from the previous disk

Thanks for your reply, Jinks.

I did as you suggested, but without success.

However, I managed to find one entry I was seeking on Ancestry.  Still, it's a nuisance when I've already forked out for the discs.

Hope your own research is going well.

Contact the producer of the discs - there may be an error which has come to light since the discs were issued.  This happened to me - a replacement disc with the correct readable files on it was forwarded to me free of charge.

Thanks for your suggestion, Nell.

I'll go through all the other discs first to make sure there are no more faults.

You may also need to check that your version of Adobe Reader is up to date (currently version 7.01 I believe)

Other ways of accessing the document are to try it in reverse ie run adobe reader and then open the pdf file from within that program or

copy the pdf file to your hard drive and double click on it to open it as normal, if the same problem persists try pressing the "F5" key on your keyboard which will force a refresh.

Falkyrn,

Success!  Many thanks.

Thanks again to Jinks and Nell.

I now have a battery of strategies should problems occur in the future.

Best wishes,
