!841/1851 census for Mere - Ambrose COWARD
« on: Friday 16 September 05 16:48 BST (UK) »

Hi
Can anybodyhelp me to  find anymore details for Ambrose COWARD b.1801 .Mere Agr.Lab

I have him 1861 Census in Mere. His wife's name was Ann and in 1861 he had a 9 year old son Uriah and his father Henry then aged 88, living with him.

I am looking to find out if there were any other children or relatives listed earlier.

With thanks

Gill (Clazy2000)

Hi Gill,

In 1851 it's just the two of them:

Mere, Wiltshire,

I'm guessing this could be his father?

Hi Debbie
Thanks for check.
I love the photo of Gt.Gran Hepzibah (what a wonderful name!)

As a Rootschat veteran I wonder if you have any ideas on this one.
The Uriah I mentioned as Ambrose Coward's son is my Gt.Grandad. However he changed his name to Uriah Gray sometime between 1861 & 71 Census, but on his wedding cert.he acknowledges Ambrose as his father.

I have ordered his birth cert.which I am waiting for but on the GRO record he is listed as COWARD, Male. There cannot be many cases of an illegitimate child being brought up by his father in those days and as Ambrose's wife was 50 when Uriah was born it is extremely unlikely she was his mother.

Be grateful if you have any ideas.

Thanks again for the check.

Best wishes

Hi Gill

I've found them in 1841 and there may be a clue to Uriah's parentage.

HO107/1183 Folio 25 Page 18

Swaynesford, Woodland & Chaddenwick, Mere,  Wiltshire
COWARD  Ambrose  35  Ag Lab
COWARD  Ann          35
GRAY  Harriett          15

All born in Wiltshire.  Ann & Harriett are both Silk workers of some kind.

Do you know if Ann's maiden name was Gray?  I'm wondering if Harriett is her daughter and Uriah could have been Ann's grandson.  If he was brought up by Ambrose and Ann then Ambrose could have been the only father he knew.  I know the father named on a marriage cert should be the natural father but isn't always the case.

This was my initial idea but if I think of anything else I'll let you know.

PS I had a lucky escape as Hepzibah was supposedly passed down to the eldest daughter in the family but my great gran put a stop to it.  My gran, mum and myself are all eldest daughters  Shocked

Debbie
You are a star!
I have Ann's name as Ann Champion m at Gillingham DOR 11 Dec. 1827 details from Wiltshire strays www.familyhistory on line website (not confirmed by any other source) but at least I now have a possible mother to look for.
I always had the suspicion that it might end up like a Thomas Hardy plot!
I have also found Ambrose in prison in Devizes in 1829 again I have ordered a photocopy of that.
Uriah went on to have 12 children one of whom was my Grandmother.
I always wanted to find a Hepzibah in my family still an Ambrose and Uriah aren't bad
Thank you so much for your help will let you know what I find.
Regards
