Marriage of George Meggison, Abt 1835-1839
« on: Friday 16 September 05 20:28 BST (UK) »

George was a widower when he married Susannah Lynn in 1847.  Two of his children are born prior to this marriage, the first one being Elizabeth Brown Meggison, born 1840 in Sunderland.  I have checked for Elizabeth's birth on freebmd, durham record office, and familysearch without luck.  Durham records online is offline.  So expect a marriage to female Brown, possibly Elizabeth, between 1835 and 1839 which I didn't find.
Can anyone help?
Thanks so much.  Everyone has been so great.

Hi Peggy

Why don't you try the GRO Indexes July 1837 onwards at www.1837online*com ?

Hi Peggy

Sorry, didn't know you had done that.

The 1861 Census entry shows the son Robert aged 17 born Morpeth.

There is an entry in the GRO Index that matches.
3Q 1843
MEGGISON Robert Morpeth 25 318

From what you say Robert's mother should be the same as Elizabeth's mother.

Hi Helen,
Would you be able to share the 1861 Census with me, for George and Susannah?  That would be much appreciated.

Hi Peggy

1861 Census
RG9/3780  Folio 30  Page 6  Sch 289
Arcade (High Street), Sunderland

MEGGISON
George Head Mar 45 Fruiterer Durham Aycliff
Susannah Wife Mar 36 Fruiterers Wife Norfolk
Robert Son U 17 Fruiterer Northumberland Morpeth
Alice Ann Daugh U 9 Scholar Sunderland
Thomas Son U 8 Scholar Sunderland
Elizabeth Daugh U 3 at home Sunderland
George Son U 2m Infant Sunderland
Elizabeth Brown Daugh U 21 Dressmaker Sunderland
NIMMO
Elizabeth Servant U 16 Servant Sunderland

Because of the way the enumerator has written the entries it's not clear if the Brown of Elizabeth is a second name or a surname.  Could be either.

Thank you kindly, Helen.  Can you explain to me, at the end of the census, it has NIMMO, and below that Elixabeth, servant ...........  What does that mean?

Hi Peggy

Elizabeth Nimmo was a servant in the household.  It's just the way I list the names - Surnames in capitals and forenames underneath. Sorry for the confusion.
