Hi, I've been tracing my Phillips family, and have found that in 1878, Joseph and Emma Phillips left Cornwall and embarked on a voyage to New Zealand. I have found that the boat they sailed on - The May Queen - left London on the 30th July 1878, and arrived in Auckland on the 19th of October. Emma was pregnant when they arrived, and gave birth to their first child, Joseph, on the 16th June 1879, in New Zealand. I can't find them anywhere in the 1881 English census, but they were back in time for the birth of their next child, William, who was born on the 26th June 1881, in St. Ives. Anyway...does anyone have any idea why they would have gone on such a long and possibly traumatic journey to only stay in New Zealand for such a short while? Thanks, Katie.
The most common reason for not staying in NZ was if the husband couldn't find a job.
As an example - a lot of people went to Australia to look for work, I have a family that emigrated from Scotland to NZ, couldnt find work, went to Australia, and then came back to NZ.
The sad thing was that the father fell overboard from the ship and drowned on the way back to NZ the second time. His widow was left with 2 children and a baby. She stayed in NZ and never remarried, somehow she survived.
Your family could have chosen to return to more familiar surroundings.
More recently(1968) my Aunt and Uncle and 4 kids emmigrated to NZ for a better life, they lasted less than a year simply because they hated it.
