Hi All
Trying locate my HILL family on both census -
On the 1881 census I have them at 64a Albert St, Stoke Damerel
as follows -
John G. HILL - M - 49 b Devonport - Engine fitter H M Dockyard
Mary A M - 45 b Plymouth
Edith D - 14 b Tavistock
Ernest S - 7 b Stoke Damerel
Adelaide Vis M - 26 b Devonport - Wife of Coast Guardsman R N
John G Vis M - 1 b Stoke Damerel
John G HILL married Mary Ann BROWN in Sept 1852.
On the 1901 census Johns birthplace is given as Plymouth??
Any assistance would be much appreciated.

Don't know if you have this but here is son Alfred in 1881
Alfred Hill 1854 Devonport, Devon, Head, Boatman-Coastguard
Living Portland, Dorset and recorded as married. Wife Adelaide is visiting with with John G as you have them.

Many thanks for all this info!! I'm just attempting to digest it all.
Just found out Alice and Edith are the same person!!
She was christened Alice Maude Edith HILL on 20th May 1866.
Thanks for Alfreds info I wondered where he was working as a Coastguard.
I have found John G HILL, now a Widower, living with his married daughters family the VANSTONEs in the 1901 census - ie Edith M A HILL married John Francis VANSTONE in 1888.
Any other info from the 1901 and 1891 census would be much appreciated.

This is all I could find - maybe she was illegitimate as Adelaide and Alfred married round about 1880. Maybe this isn't her at all but thought you should see it. Maybe Toll was Adelaide's maiden name but can't find anything to prove this as yet.Can't find an Adelaide Toll in 1861 so

John Vanstone has done a runner on 1891 so presumably he was a Steward in a Sick berth/Bay on some sort of vessel and at sea???

I didn't think HELL was a genuine surname??
On John VANSTONEs marriage cert he gives profession as a " sick berth steward"!!
Would you be able to check for John Francis VANSTONE b1859 in Devonport + his parents John Richard b1831 in Plymouth and Mary VANSTONE b1833 in Stonehouse on the 1861 census? Hoping to find some more siblings.

Just checking the 1820 - is this correct??
I have John aged 40 on the 1871 census with a different wife, Mary aged 38?
+ with NO children?
I could have the wrong couple?
