I've found 2 sites which give loads of detailed information regarding travelling shows and fairs, and gypsie travellers.
1) www.thegalloper.com Link Reported Broken 14 July 2007
2) http://romany.rootschat.net/ Both give census details, the second site parish records, marriages and more.

I grew up with the notion that my family were a circus family, funny things you pick up on when you are little Huh
Only to have the vision of having had high wire walkers or some daring circus act in the family shattered when I started doing the Family tree to find out that my Grandad was born in Circus street in Liverpool Grin. doesn't look like I will find them in any of those lists after all Celia Wink

same here-oral history said that my grandfather was a bare knuckle prize fighter in a travelling fair, with tales of relatives who were acrobats and jugglers
Nothing so romantic-I come from a long illustrious line of dustmen and street hawkers who have lived in a small part of Camberwell since 1800....

Hi Casalguidi

Thanks a lot for that info.  It's a site well worth knowing about. In a few minutes just checking it I've found some really good info already.

Cheers,  Mac

The link to John M. Turner's "Dictionary of British Circus Biography" Project is on a few other threads but warrants a place on this thread too. John has 11,000 records in his biographical database, with over 10,500 records of circus visits. He's happy to share this information with other researchers, including family historians, on a reciprocal basis.

The Cornish Funfairs; Detailing the Showmen of the Duchy of Cornwall website  contains an article about Anderton and Rowlands funfair which is probably the oldest firm travelling in Cornwall

The Family Trees section of fun-fairs.co.uk "All the fun of the Fair" message forum may help RootsChatters who are related to families in the Fun Fair business.

My Grandma told me that we are related to Gypsy Rose Lee - I suppose, not the American.  However, I have found that GtGt Grandma was a Lee whose famliy came from Bedworth, Warks. some time in the 1700's
