Celia, Glad you got the hang of it - I think I have it "conquered" - HAH! but I am pretty good at using the directories - if you ever want an extra eye just let me know - I find them absolutely fascinating, and could spend hours grazing... I will be very sad when they remove them - they are only available for the next three years according to current site information - regards, drakes

Hi Drakes I am a dab hand with the directories (Cheshie that is)as well but only the books themselves.I use them often, actually i could do with an eye in London or Middlesex i could never fathom out which area's were in London and which were not. My Grandfathers Nieces and Nephews (the ones i found so far)were born in Mile end. where the parents married in 1899. in the district of what looks like S Paul ,Bow End.At the time they were living at 30 and 15 Thomas street. The children were born in1902,1905, 1907.All i know is they lived in the east end.so i was told. I haven't a clue which book to use.Have you? Yes i read about the availability time,How sad after all that work.
P.S I thought i might find them at the same address or another later.

Celia, I would be happy to take a look if you would like - just let me know names, etc. whatever you have, and if we're looking in the London area - I would be happy to scan the London Times archives for you - one never knows who may turn up in the news... I haven't really sorted the London coverage out....but am pretty quick at searching in the directories both by area and page browse.....have learned through luck and mistake how to effectively use the directories... I will be out of town for a week -...so won't be able to get 'on the case' immediately.......
take care, drakes

Hello Drakes I have a good excuse for the late reply If you offer is still on.Can you keep eye open for a Morgan Mathew( My grand uncle) I still cant find him after 1901.On that census he was now aged 22 and was back with his mother in Stainsby Road Limehouse. He was a teacher then.My mum wasn't born till 1909 but she once told me he was a teacher in the east end.She was old enough to remember that.So Morgan must have stayed a teacher.Every time i have tried Morgan Mathew, i get Mathew Morgan.Cant find him under teachers. Would Morgan have been exempt from call up if he was a teacher

I had the Historical Directories site in my favourites but until today hadn't even had a nose at it!!! I have just done a quick search for any of my Challinor(Challenor) line in Cheshire and immediately found my GGG Grandfather listed as a farmer in the tiny parish of Shocklach Oviatt. He is in the Morris & Co Directory for Cheshire 1874. I'm so excited

Nearly three pages.Cant think were all those shops could have been theirs only a sprinkle of them now.Must find a shorter road to do next time though

Hello Cathy Thanks for comming up with that record I never even thought of looking for war records,i had forgotten about the call up though. You never know it might be Morgan. How do i find out if it is him before i order a record. If it is him it might give a reason as to why his mother my G.Grandmother a widow, moved from London to the now Wirral.Where she died in 1918. i have often wondered. she lived with grandma Mathew.Granddad was in the M/N older brother in the army.So if Morgan went as well. she would have been alone in London

Hello Jerico If there is a quick look and a seach, do tell me about it It depends what you type in realy.I thought i would be all right typing in an unsual surename.I got 1,648 hits, so it must have searched all the cheshire directories of various publishers. It does take a time to learn how to use it though

Hi Jan yes i am aware of that but sometimes you only get maybe 3 of the surenames on a page.if it starts with private residence.Next hit might go to commercial with one surename. So its quicker to copy one line, rather than fill the computer with pages with one surename on.The other reason i do it that way is you don't miss anything. For instance i could find a" Whatsisname.Charles Henry" that is mine, living at his private address.Later i might find him as manager of a bank and the business address.I think the reason it takes so long is the pages are slow downloading (but my computer is old now).I am a bit scared of switching off in case i lose my place and have to go through he whole thing again to find it.Hopfully when i get the two year old computer (off a relative).I can have in a couple of weeks,a couple of months ago I can copy faster

That's good Celia!!!
I'm glad you're aware about the pdf format, and yes, I agree, it can be quicker just copying the relevant bits.
