I've seen some fantastic restorations done on here and it gives me courage to ask whether anything can be done with my grandmother. her photo I mean. I believe it was taken in about 1892 in Wexford, a studio portrait but over the years the face has faded so much that it can't be seen. It is one I scanned quite sometime ago, borrowed from a relative so I don't have the original at present, I can only hope it has enough resolution for you guys since I didn't know what I was doing at the time, although reading this messageboard I've since picked up some hints.
I've noticed that in the absence of a face some of you have tried to reconstruct one or use another so I have 2 more photographs which are the next oldest of her, unfortunately they would have been taken at least ten years later and probably more, in Liverpool, but nevertheless they might be useful.
The other thing is her dress looks to have a shine as if it was satin, so maybe it would look good coloured, what do you think? perhaps a burgundy? I always remember my nan wearing dark reds.
Here goes and I hope it's not too dreadful for you. The next post will have the two more recent ones since it appears I can only upload 2 to a message.

Wow that frock could hit you in the eye Meldrew! Love the colour though, brill, thanks for giving it a go. My poor nan's face, so scratched I wonder if somebody must have carried that photo in their wallet.
You've done an exceptionally nice job on the background, I like the way it graduates down, I don't mind missing the damaged bits.

Is the scanned area of the face less clear than on the original photograph? It could be that the scanner resolution is insufficient. I expanded the tonal range over a very roughly selected area of the face. When magnified, you can see a pattern of squares 8pixels x 8 pixels which I reckon are generated by the scanner's interpolation software. The resolution across the face (distance in pixels) is approx 112. But as the depth of the final 8 bits is due to interpolation, the 'native' scanned resolution is 112/8 (14). To get good recognisable facial features you need a resolution of 150 (from my experience with cross stitch kits). So what I'm getting at is:
If there's an option to stop the scanner software 'improving' the scan depth you might try switching it off & scanning at the same resolution. or Try scanning just the facial area at 8x the resolution used.
ps. Liverpudlian photography is often no worse than that from other locations.

Hello Arnietheother and welcome to Rootschat and especially to my nan, you've managed to get it a bit clearer for me thanks. Unfortunately until I manage to get me sticky mitts on the original again, this is the best I have, and when I do I'll need a step by step, mouse-click by mouse-click set of instructions to do what you are recommending - total ignoramus here when it comes to photos However, I have my doubts as to whether the original is very much better.
I hope Liverpudlian photography (apart from my own) is at least as good if not better than other locations ! I mentioned it in case anybody read the name and location of the American Studios in Bold Street on the two more recent ones and thought they were of a different person. The one from Wexford was probably taken very shortly before she came home to Liverpool after about a 10 year stay, from about 1880 until mid 1890's, the note on the back of it says she was 16 years old.

Of course I don't mind, that's why I gave you the address for it. You've made her look a lot younger too which is good since that one must have been taken in 1911 when she must have been about 35 years old.
