George Ernest and Kate Foster, Portsmouth to America
« on: Saturday 17 September 05 17:11 UTC (UK) »

My great grandmother was one of 9 daughters of James Graham (Navy then coastguard). Her sister Kate Graham was born 1886 in West Mersea Essex.
Kate married George Ernest Foster 30th July 1910 at Immanuel Baptist Chapel Victoria Road North, Southsea, Portsmouth.  George was a Royal Navy seaman and his address given as HMS Invincible, Trafalgars Institute, Edinburgh Road Landport.
My gran said years ago that Kate had something wrong with her leg, that they had 2 sons and that they went to America.
Any suggestions or help finding George and Kate and their descendents would be appreciated.

1930 census (index only, maybe someone here has access to the full records?) Berrien, MI, has:

George Foster, b. 1883 England
Kate Foster, b. 1886
Ernest, b. 1914
Edith, b. 1915

Here's the record --

1930 Census Dist. 49, St. Joseph, Berrien  Michigan

289 Prospect Street:

FOSTER

George 47 b Eng parents b Eng immigrated 1921, Alien [meaning not naturalized], gardener working for private family
Kate 44 b Eng father b Canada mother b Eng
Ernest 16 b Australia
Edith 15  b Australia

You may be able to find the family in ships lists  - if they came in from NY they will be on the Ellis Island records. See http://www.stevemorse.org/ and use his search engine to search.

If you don't find them try http://shipslists-online.rootschat.net/ for help

This is a good candidate for your George in the SSDI
George Foster b 27 Jan 1883 d Jul 1966 Detroit, Wayne, Michigan

The only Kate I can find in MI isn't the right dob
Kate Foster b 20 Aug 1893  d Dec 1982 Harper Woods, Wayne, Michigan

Did you know they had gone to Australia? That's another lead you can track, there are passenger lists for Aus. ships too. I remember seeing an online Aus. BDM site too but I can't remember what it is called or its URL. Maybe someone else will know

Thankyou so much for that record.  I'm certain that it is the right family, as Kate's father James Graham was born in Kingston Canada.  I had no idea that they had gone to Australia first though.
Thankyou again

No sign of Kate in the Ellis Island records.  Her sister Agnes Stafford went to Ontario at some point after 1906. I suppose Kate could have gone to Michigan via her sister.
