I've been trying to find John Robert McColl on the 1871 or 1881 census. He was always called John Robert McColl but on the 1891 and 1901 census he is just John McColl, born 1855 give or take a year. The 1891 census listed him as John W Coll (typo).
He married in 1882 in Cardiff to Elizabeth Bryant so in 1871/1881 he should be listed as an unmarried shipwright or mariner. I don't believe he had any relatives in the area so he would have been a boarder. He ran away from Scotland so he could appear as early as 1871 and was definitely working in the Avonmouth area by 1882.
Any help with lookups is greatly appreciated.

Hi Missy
sorry you did not get a reply on this one. I can only suggest this chap - he is in a house of boarders in the ship construction industry and Barrow was certainly the place for that!

I have my doubts about this one, regarding his age, except that possibly he would say he was older in order to find work? Again the neighbours and fellow boarders are in the "iron ship building" industry.

Thanks Arranroots
He's a real dilemma!
My mother thinks he may have had cousins in Wales but her memory is foggy. I found a George McColl, listed for the Pontypridd 1901 census who was born 1861 Bristol, but I can't find any other census records for him. I thought he might be a relative who drew John Robert to the area but there are George McColls in Wales who are Irish so maybe it's not the right connection.
I'm chasing some leads on his father.... I think they both were merchant marines sporadically so maybe I can find them that way.
Maybe I'll have to wait for the worldwide DNA database!
Thanks again Arranroots
