Much Cowarne/Stretton Grandison/Blackway
« on: Sunday 18 September 05 19:54 BST (UK) »

I wonder if anyone could give me some geographical guidance.

I have an ancestor who is recorded on one census as being born in 1822 in Much Cowarne and on another as being from Blackway - I don't know the area at all - does this tie up?

I have looked up the IGI record and can find someone of the right name with the right father in Stretton Grandison - Am I on the right track or way off beam?

Thanks in anticipation

Hi Sarah Smiley

link removed

LOL what a link! but that's much cowarne on multimap. I use it often as my UK geography is poor to say the least! You can zoom in or out on the maps. If you play around with it, you will see Stretton Grandison is less than 5 miles South West of Much Cowarne. Blackway is more difficult - try http://www.old-maps.co.uk/ for... old  maps LOL.

Good luck

Ger

Ger

Thanks for the mightily impressive link!

I am actually living only about two hours drive away from Herefordshire - so perhaps I should go and investigate - especially as I've never been there before. I had worked out that Stretton Grandison was five miles away from Much Cowarne - but would someone travel that far to baptise a child in 1822 - it seems a long way for those times - I will study the old maps and see if I can find the Blackway connection.

Thanks again

Cheers Sarah I did forget to mention I spend a lot of time stating the obvious lol

Best of luck hon - if you stumble across any of my lot (and if I stumble across any of yours) let me know!

Happy hunting

Ger Smiley

PS maybe the baby had other family members (e.g. grandparents) in the area of stretton grandison..? just a thought. oh and the herefordshire record office can find and copy stuff. i had some folks in a little place which didnt show up on a map and they were able to find it (a farm and surrounding hamlets) as well as the census records and map section. £5 research fee plus copies Smiley

Thanks Ger - I hadn't thought about grandparents - it seems quite obvious now you point it out!
