Naval Dockyard at Pembroke
« on: Monday 19 September 05 04:09 UTC (UK) »

Does anyone know of any records relating to the Naval Dockyard and Pembroke Dock.

On the death certificate of my ancestor, Thomas HOWELL, in 1899 his occupation is given as "Superannuated Blacksmith, HM Dockyard".

If this means that he was in receipt of a pension, who would have been paying it, and would there be any surviving records related to this ?

Thanks

A couple of websites that look interesting:

http://www.gwpda.org/naval/pembroke.htm

http://www.pembrokedock.org/h_dockyard_2.htm

He would have received his pension from the government and records should be at TNA at Kew.  Ref ADM214/46 contains a History of the Dockyard dated 1895.

Little Nel - thanks for the links ... looks like some interesting articles, now I just need to find some time to read them !!

Lambkin - thanks for the suggestion of the mayor, I will try that.
I have heard of the book Pembroke People, but I believe this only covers the period up until about 1830ish? My Howell ancestors did not settle in Pembroke Dock until the 1840s.

Thanks again,
