To live, to love, to learn, to leave a legacy...

Hi,
I'm trying to track down the immigration to Naseby, Otago of Christopher George and Elizabeth (nee Maxwell) REA from Castlemaine in Victoria Australia.
They would have travelled from Australia to NZ between 1860 and 1867 when their third child Robert James REA was born in Naseby.
With them would have been two children Isabella (born Castlemaine 1862) and Thomas John (born 1863).
I seem to be going around in circles with passenger lists can anybody offer any advice or help?
warmest wishes

That's great.
One died in a place call Waikaia (south island maybe) and the other died unknown but I'm assuming they were buried together because they died ten years apart.
Does anyone know where Waikaia is and if it is possible that it is a part of Dunedin now?
cheers

Waikaia is a small town on the Waikaia River in Southland north of Invercargill and east of Lumsden.

That's really helpful, thanks !
I actually had no joy finding the deaths as they occurred in 1888/1898.
I wonder if anyone knows what the nearest deaths registry and cemetery/graveyard would be to Waikaia/Gore?
Many thanks again

Hi proteantime,
I presumed from your earlier post that you didn't have the dates of death of Christopher George or Elizabeth REA, but later realised you probably do. In any case, here they are:
REA Christopher George died 1898, folio 1493 (Nokomai & Switzers). REA Elizabeth died 1898, folio 1860 (Nokomai & Switzers).
You can purchase these death certificates from Births, Deaths & Marriages, NZ Dept of Internal Affairs.
Do a Google search on 'waikaia cemetery' or 'waikaia council' to see if you can find a cemetery, or else search for 'Otago & Southland genealogy' for any organisation that can help.
Let us know if you get stuck.
Regards, riley

Thanks riley,
Actually we may have stumbled across a child I didn't know about because Mrs Christopher Rea - Elizabeth was born in 1832 and died on 18/08/1898 of a tumour. I don't have her certificate unfortunately but I might try and track down if someone in the family had it to write that date down somewhere.
I believe the Elizabeth you list may be their daughter and must have been born in NZ.
They had three children that I know of:
Isabella b:1862 Castlemaine Victoria Australia Thomas John b: 1863 Castlemaine Victoria (both of the above were possibly married in Dunedin) Robert James b:29/09/1867 Naseby Otago (have cert.)
many thanks again for a new clue!

Checked headstones for Waikaia, no Reas but they still could be buried there.
Only two families in Southland region, you could give them a ring.

Thanks a million for checking. I had no joy when I tried searching for the cemetery.
Two families? Do you mean still alive?
Many thanks
