went searching for an ancestor
« on: Monday 19 September 05 15:31 BST (UK) »

I went searching for an ancestor. I cannot find him still.
He moved around from place to place and did not leave a will.
He married where a courthouse burned. He mended all his fences.
He avoided any man who came to take the census.
He always kept his luggage packed, this man who had no fame.
And every 20 years or so, this rascal changed his name.
His parents came from Europe. They could be upon some list
of passengers to the USA, but somehow they got missed.
And no one else in the world is searching for this man
So, I play geneasolitaire to find him if I can.
I'm told he's buried in a plot, with tombstone he was blessed
but the weather took the engraving and some vandals took the rest,
He died before the county clerks decided to keep records,
No family bible has emerged in spite of all my efforts.
To top it off this ancestor, who caused me many groans.
Just to give me one more pain, betrothed a girl named JONES.

Graceland Grin

Please allow me to comment on a superbly very lovely poem, the care you took over the copy, so full of truths, so close to my heart, it warmed me through and through, moved me to the core.

So,

HOW did you know that my Thomas Scott was married to Jane JONES?

Great poem Grin

I live in Wales, with mostly Welsh ancestry, as yet, surprisingly  I have yet to find a Jones connected to my family Huh

However, I am cursed with multiple JOHN MORGAN's in both my parents families.  I am also growing less than fond of ancestors who have blessed their children with the name Ann(e) or Hannah Huh

Great poem G  Grin

Well !  I Found my Jones yippee !

My Mum's great grandparents.  I had given up after a two year search, then three weeks ago, thought now I have Ancestry.co.uk and they have 1861 I'll take a look.  Hey Presto !  There they were in Cheetham.

I was so chuffed to be able to tell Mum who is 91.

All I need now is to find her Mother's side of the family, the Bowyers, who are proving equally hard to find.

Come out, come out, where ever you are ....

Thanks Jan,
Hope you find all your Jones soon.

I am beginning to think the Bowyers were gypsies touring the Irish Bogs on census night !

Graceland - you've made my day.

Geneasolitaire - what a wonderful name - and so true.

However ..... I may be the only one searching for an individual, but the rootschatters are a friendly, supportive and helpful team of friends.

No Smith, Jones or Brown in my tree yet, but Carter gave me some troubles.

All the best
