Royal Army/Navy Isle of Wight

Hello!  I'm told that my great grandfather was in both the Royal Navy and Royal Army.  He finished his service with one and joined the other, so I'm told.  At the time of my grandfather's birth in 1911, he was stationed at the Isle of Wight.  Ryde, to be exact.   I've tried researching this on my own with no luck, but does anyone know which branch of the military would have been stationed at Ryde, Isle of Wight around 1910-1911?   Can I just assume that it's the Royal Navy?

Thanks in advance to anyone with any knowledge on this.

Do you have your grandfather's birth certificate?  This will tell you his father's occupation.  It should be quite clear from the description which he was serving in at that time.  If he was in the Navy, I would have expected him to be in Portsmouth over the other side of the Solent.
