PARKER - Hereford 1841
« on: Sunday 11 September 05 22:14 BST (UK) »

I am in need of a little 1841 Hereford help if possible....

I have been searching for many years for the marriage of my gx4 grandfather, Thomas Cooper,  to a Mary Ann (or Marianne) Parker, born Hereford & also her family.  I know she had an older sister Elizabeth. On the IGI there are two sisters who match, except for baptism/birth dates - which conflict wildly with census entries in 1851 for Marianne (she died in 1854 - a beautiful grave in Congleton, Cheshire, sadly now overgrown) & 1861,71&81 for Elizabeth. By 1851 Marianne & Elizabeth were both married - Marianne to Thomas, living in Congleton, Cheshire - Elizabeth to a fellow from Liverpool. I can find no Parker in the 1851 for Hereford (which I have) and have been working on the line that the family moved north to Cheshire.  I know from trade directories prior to 1840 that there was a Parker family, booksellers, in Hereford.  If anyone comes across Marianne or Elizabeth in Hereford in 1841 I would appreciate the nod... I am reluctant to buy another census unless I know they are there...

Many thanks,

David....

Hi,
This looks very promising....

Mary Ann would have married Thomas in about 1844/45, as the eldest child Fanny Gethen (later spelt Gothen) Cooper was born 25/March/1845...

1851 CONGLETON CHESHIRE
MARIANNE COOPER, MAR, 26, ATTORNEYS WIFE, HEREFORDSHIRE, HEREFORD.

Her sister, Elizabeth I have in the 1861, 1881 & 1901 - given age as 40, 60, 70 - so born c. 1821...

The rest of the household at St Martin St may well answer a few theories...

Thank you,

David..

Hi,
Thank you...

Elizabeth married a chap called HOLMES, from Liverpool. She had 1 daughter b.1847 and was widowed soon after... In 1861 she was living with Mary Ann's husband as a housekeeper... probably looking after her children.  In 1881 she was still there, but living in the lodge on the estate.  Thomas Cooper went on to be a prominent Congleton solicitor, Mayor & Alderman...

All Thomas & Mary Ann's children had middle names that were family surnames...

FANNY GETHEN COOPER, SUSETTE HOPE COOPER, ADA KING COOPER, MARGARET SWINNERTON, ANNIE PARKER COOPER...
The only exception was ETHELBERTA COOPER, who sadly died aged 3 YRS...

I have found all the links except GETHEN, but there are obvious ones in the IGI, it is just finding Mary Ann's parents that is proving elusive, and her marriage to Thomas..

I have the idea that the Mary Ann at St Martins is the one - Elizabeth was probably married.  I get the feeling that the parents had died maybe...the hunt goes on.

Anyway, thank you for your help.

David...
