On the SNWM there is only one candidate for John Hamilton, Seaforth Highlanders:
Surname HAMILTON Firstname John Service Number 201146 Date Death 19/09/1917 Decoration M.M. Place of birth Other - 21-09-17. 4th Bn. SNWM roll THE SEAFORTH HIGHLANDERS Rank Pte Theatre of death F.& F.
There is another John Hamilton, Seaforth Highlanders but he was born in Larbert and died 1918. So Pte 201146 looks like your man.
Ive scrapped my ancestry sub so I cant look up for his medal card/ service records (hopefully hes with the 'H' surnames now online) Fingers crossed.
The roll book i have access to is for Selkirk only not selkirkshire. You would need someone who has a Galashiels roll of honour book but i have not seen one sorry. but I will keep a look out for you alan

Thanks for the reply, I noticed a link in an earlier reply you have given to someone else re a bookshop I think that deals in borders record books, do you think I may get a roll of honour there for Galashiels???
Scotty. Sorry dont know which bookshop ,I would think that most Councils would keep such records in which case try the Scottish borders council Newtown St Boswells on 01835 824000 which covers Galashiels or maybe you could try the Records office at The Hub Hawick

I was in Selkirk last year 2008 (I'm from Peebles, but live in W. Aust) and saw the war memorial ourside Sir Walter Scott's courthouse. On it was the name of my grandfather's brother, Andrew (aka Dan) Brown, who was KIA in France (don't know the year, but about 1916-1918) He served with the Royal Army Medical Corps as a private. He would have been in his mid 20's when killed. HIs parents were James Brown and Annie Turnbull. If you still have the Roll of Honour Book, would you be able to confirm my info, and any other info you can find, (pretty) please! I also have his brother Jock, who served as a private in the Black Watch in WW!, but have no info on him at all. Much obliged. Maureen
