Hi

On my grandparents Marriage cert their address is given as SHIP ROW and I beleive this is still there today although probably not houses

Can anyone tell me anything about this place around 1919
as I am not having much luck with my research at the moment I thought I might try to find out a bit more about where they lived

Also is there a way of finding out when properties were built and demolished as they lived in CROMBIE ROAD after their marriage until their respective deaths in 1944 & 1950

Also if anyone could tell me of any schools in the area thta my father is likely to have attended

Hi, I live just outside Aberdeen and know Ship Row although I'm not originally a local. It has a real mixed bag of buildings these days - from a modern cinema and NCP car park to the Aberdeen Maritime Museum and Provost Ross' House.

Provost Ross' House, Ship Row, Aberdeen

Situated on Shiprow between Union Street and the Harbour, a survival of mediaeval Aberdeen, Provost Ross' House is the second oldest dwelling house in the city. It was built in 1593 by master-mason Andrew Jamieson. It became the residence of Provost John Ross of Arnage in 1702. In the 20th C., in a derelict state and threatened with demolision, the house was acquired by the National Trust for Scotland. It was restored with support from the Trust's members, the City of Aberdeen and the Associated British Picture Corporation. It was re-opened by the Secretary of State for Scotland in 1954.

Not sure what other old buildings (if any) exist. You could try contacting the National trust for Scotland or Aberdeen Museums.

Crombie Rd is south side of the docks. Not sure about houses there without looking.

The Shiprow is as Keith says now, a mixed bag. If you go into google images there is a photo there but I would be inclined to contact the Local Studies Library to see if they can help. The email address is LocalStudiesLibrary@aberdeencity.go.uk

Crombie Road is in Torry, a district of Aberdeen and I think that it mainly used as a business area now.The local primary schools would have been Walker Road School or Victoria Road School depending on which end of Crombie Road your grandparents lived on. Your father would then have gone to Torry Intermediate School although if he was academic he might have gone into town to a school such as Aberdeen Grammar School. All of these schools are still in use though Torry Intermediate is now Torry Academy ( it became a Secondary/Comprehensive school in 1970)

When I was a wee girl many years ago We always had a holiday in Aberdeen and vistited my dad's relatives I can remember Crombie road vaguely as my I am sure one of my dad's sisters lived there . Victoria road school rings a distant bell as the one Dad attended thanks for the jolt. I wonder if there are any school records going back to the 1930's!!!!

I was last in Aberdeen nearly 2 years ago on a errand for my parents who both sadly died within 10 months of each other. Dad's wish was that his ashes were returned to Aberdeen and although Mum couldn't face the trip for a while after he passed away It was her wish in September 2003 when we made the trip, that when she died she would have her ashes scattered at the same place as Dad's. Little did we know then that it would be exactly 2 months later to the day that we made the trip again to fulfill her request.

It was shortly after that I decided to try my family tree [so many old photo's with no dates or names]
I have hit a very large Brick wall and am now looking at the place where my dad grew up. Hence the request for SHIP ROW & CROMBIE ROAD

I know that the house dad grew up is no longer there as I remember that my mum & dad visited within the maybe last 15 years or so and He was very upset that it had been demolished.

I've been thinking about the school records and it might be worth contacting Aberdeen City Archives. Email address - archives@aberdeencity.gov.uk
The city council have a website at www.aberdeencity.gov.uk where you can find out about the archive service.

There is the local family history society too at www.anesfhs.org.uk well worth becoming a member if you have family from the north east of Scotland. Even if you don't want to become a member there are a lot of helpful volunteers who might be able to help you for a small fee.

I lived in Torry for about 26 years till 1994 so I'm always interested when it is mentioned here. I went to Torry Academy and my kids all went to Victoria Road School in the mid eighties. Eleven years on and I still miss the place though I'm not too far away from it.

many thanks for suggestions re school records will give it a try
Joined anesfhs a few weeks ago and have made a request for a search to be done on my behalf as I said previously am hitting a VERY big brick wall at the moment
I envy you living near Aberdeen as I have always loved any time I have spent in Scotland and it might have made my search a lot easier. Aberdeen is certainly in my blood [somewhere] Although my dad was born and brought up there he moved to London when he was 17 where he met my mum and they lived until when Dad retired they moved to Northampton [where I am now]

re Brick wall 'tis just so big at present
Have posted on various sections and although have had many possible leads am still so unsure of any of them
Am at present hoping the anefhs can trace my recent relies all of which have passed away so that I can at least find my grandparents dates of birth and places of birth
I know patience is a virtue but am becoming very frustrated at present

Hence my reason for trying to find out more about where my Dad lived as a child and where his parents lived all their married life.

Anyway for what it is worth here goes

need to find

My grandfather EDWARD LEWIS
I have his first marriage certificate to Margaret Mcintosh Buchan took place in Aberdeen on 20.03.1902 his address was 16 SHIPROW occupation Steamboat Fisherman, age 25 ,Bachelor, parents listed as EDWARD & SARAH
Edward [deceased] Sarah------ previously Lewis maiden surname------

they had one child Edward Alexander born 19.03.1903 he died aged 15 on 13.09.1918 from a heart condition & flu at institution Larbert Naval residence his death was registered by an attendant stating his father was on a minesweeper? Huh

Margaret died 26.10.1914 aged 36 of TB her death was registered by her cousin Elizabeth Mitchell. I am assuming that Edward was at Sea at it lists husband as 1st class R.N.V.R 27779

Edward married my grandmother on 22.08.1919 stating his Parents names as HENRY [deceased] & SARAH maiden surname as WARREN

the discrepancy arises between his fathers name 1st marriage[ EDWARD] 2nd Marriage [HENRY] the address given as 62 Crombie Road

I Have had no joy in finding his birth cert in England or Scotland so far although there is one possability in Wolverhampton.

I would dearly love to find his birth cert or more info on his RNVR/ fishing Career but have had info before saying that the number given is not correct [BW ] I am unable to go to Kew to try to trace this and Researchers are beyond my finances so unless I win the Lottery to be able to give up work or engage a researcher I am a bit stuck there.
I would also love to know if Edward & Mary had any other children but as this is not available online I am sort of stuck there too

I also have memories of what I always knew as my dad's cousin "Madge"
but although she was quite a bit older than my dad I have no idea which "side" of the family she came from Huh

so you see I am up against the BW like many many others hoping for a break through!!!!

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated
