Henry MARCHANT and Harriet JEFF were married 1 Sep 1906 in Lambeth, London. At some point they emigrated to Australia. They had at least one child, as 2 descendants (sisters or cousins) posted online but they did not reply to my email. This was a few years ago. Does anyone have some good advice on how to find out more about Henry and Harriet? Diana.

If you can find a death record for one or the other, you can glean a large amount of information -most oz certificates contain details of children, marriage, parents, time in Australia.
Do you have any idea from the posted information as to which state the family came to in Australia? Also names of parents as this shows on most Oz death indexes.
There is a death in the nsw index 23658/1939 MARCHANT HENRY EDMOND ANNE DUBBO
There are a number of mentions of Henry Marchant in the National archives http://www.naa.gov.au/the_collection/recordsearch.html
Could this one be a son (it would negate the above death record)? MARCHANT LESLIE LEONARD : Service Number - 42811 : Date of birth - 02 Apr 1906 : Place of birth - KENT ENGLAND : Place of enlistment - MELBOURNE : Next of Kin - MARCHANT HENRY
Someone with access to the NSW BDM CDs can check births to about 1918. Online is only available to 1905.

Thanks for helping. I have a feeling Henry and Harriet left England in the 1930's. I can't find the original posting online, will have to do some searching...saw it about 5 years ago, and there was no mention of where they went in Australia. I pretty much have Harriet's ancestry - she was my great-grandfather's half-sister. I really wanted to know about their children, etc. As far as the one born in Kent, I guess it is possible they lived there, but both were born and married in Lambeth, both with E. Sussex roots. Diana.

Hi Diana
As I mentioned - if we can find a death for Harriet or Henry, it will have details of their children - which is what you are looking for. Finding a death will be easier if you can advise us of their parents names

Diana,
As Trish indicated, names of parents show on most Australian death indexes. That is why it would help us to help you if you can provide this information for Henry MARCHANT and Harriet JEFF. Also, do you have an idea of the birthdates of Henry and Harriet.
Trish mentioned a Leslie Leonard MARCHANT, father Henry, b Kent 1906. There is the death of what must be this Leslie Leonard MARCHANT in the Victorian Death Index 1921-1985 so he can be ruled out as a lead. MARCHANT Leslie Leonard, father Henry, mother Mabel Clare GUNN, died aged 71 in BLAC (Blackburn?) in 1977 #29229

Hi - Harriet Jeff was b. ca 1885, Lambeth, daughter of Thomas Jeff and Mary Message Oliver. Henry was b. ca 1879, Lambeth, son of William and Fanny Marchant. I don't know Henry's mother's maiden name. Hope this helps. Diana.

Hello Diana,
No help except for elimination purposes
I didn't find their deaths, or deaths of possible children of theirs in the Victorian Death Index 1921-1985 (and, if Henry and Harriet came to Australia after 1920 and had been in Victoria, one might have expected to find them given their birthdates of ca 1879 and ca 1885).
People who have access to indexes for other states might try - but, unfortunately, most of the indexes don't extend to as recent a date as the Victorian one.
Sorry,
JAP

Hi Diana
I can check Qld deaths to about 1960 but only at the library or LDS. I will look when I am next there.
You said you thought the family immigrated after 1930 - this would surely mean any children were born in UK and may not have emigrated with their parents? or Alternatively the children immigrated and then brought their parents to Australia (as has often happened).

I believe the online postings I saw about this family were from a couple of grand daughters who did live in Australia. Diana.
