I went to my local District public library today to have a look at some parish registers. Unfortunately, these were copies of the original records, on fiche, and with no index! Virtually unuseable.
Can anyone confirm if the Northants. RO's parish registers are typewritten transcripts in fiche/book form, with an index (it's not very clear on their website).
The Parish Registers are on fiche and also some in book form.
The volunteers transcribe the Parish Registers in their own format so some may have surname indexes others may not.
They would be typewritten if volunteers have transcribed them.
The best thing to do would be to ask the Record Office in Northmpton if the Parishes you are interested in are listed as being transcribed. and whether they have indexes (if needed).

Many thanks for the information. As you suggest, perhaps I shall have to contact the RO for final clarification.
(The trouble is, I've been spoilt after several visits to the Centre for Oxfordshire Studies in Oxford, where all parishes are available as typewritten transcripts - with indexes - in book form, and all just an arm's reach from the desk!)
