Ferguson
« on: Tuesday 20 September 05 23:29 BST (UK) »

I have hit a brick wall with my Ferguson research and wonder if anyone can help. I have a John Ferguson who married Ann Sinclair in 1884 in Oban, Johns parents are John Ferguson (ploughman) deceased and Isabella Ferguson m.s. McCallum but I can find no record of them.  The first I can find John jnr. is on the 1881 census and his birthplace is Kilmorich but I have made enquiries and there is no record of him and I can't find any death certificate for his mother or father. I have tried everywhere does anyone have any ideas what to do next.

Hi Dorie

Have you had a look at Scotlands People site.  I did a quick search and narrowed down the fields. There is only one entry for an Isabella Ferguson, other Surnames: M*ccallum; died: 1897; birth year: 1831; place: Perth. As for John snr. there are four entries in Perth between 1855-1884 with a birth year of 1828 +/- 5 years.  You would obviously have to pay to view the individual certs or entries.  The one for Isabella, given that it's the only one, looks promising.

Regards.

Hi Monica Thanks for your reply. I wouldn't like to say how much I have spent over the past two years on the Scotlands People site looking for my Fergusons, I think I have looked up every Isabella Ferguson everywhere and also nearly all the John Fergusons to no avail. Unfortunately the ones you mentioned are among the ones I have already looked up and had to discount. The Isabella you mentioned is actually married to a man named McCallum and her maiden surname is Ferguson the Isabella I am looking for is the other way about, but thanks for going to the trouble of looking. Roll on the day when Scotlands People get the earlier census records online.
