I am quite sure that this is not the correct place to post this, but unfortunately the most appropriate board appears to be locked . . . so I’m sorry, it’s here!

My question is; is there a facility on this forum whereby one can tell if a PM has been ‘picked up’ by the recipient. The ‘Outbox’ does not appear to give any indication if a PM has been received or whether it is still sitting somewhere waiting to be read.
Are we totally reliant on a reply from the recipient to confirm that the message has been received? . . . advice appreciated !

Hi Littlechild

The recipient of your personal message should get an email delivered to their usual email address to notify them that there is a personal message waiting for them.  However, this facility can be disabled by Rootschatters themselves in their profile if they choose not to receive an email.

In any case, whether they have disabled email notification or not for personal messages, they should get a "pop-up" when they log into Rootschat to notify them that there is a personal message waiting.

Although you can't tell if they have actually read your personal message, you can see when they last logged into Rootschat which gives you a fair idea that they may well have read the message.  If you click on the person's name (next to any post they have made) you will then see some data including something like this Last Online:  Today at 06:49:11

Hope this helps

Hiya casalguidi,

Apologies for raising an old subject but the query interested me. I am on a couple of sites which do have a facility that lets members know if the recipient has read a personal message. One is a site where you can make new friends and the other is a greeting card site where it lets you know that the recipient has viewed the card which you posted. It's a handy option although I presume since there has been only the one query on the subject the vast majority of RootsChatters have no objection to not having such a facility.

You presume rightly Grin its as casalguidi says, you get a rootschat "You have received a personnel mail".You can go to the rootschat homepage, but you cant read your personnel mail till you log on then the message is in your face Grin. So if you check the last on line as said, you know the recipient has read the mail.If they don't reply to it, i would presume it has been ignored.Or they have a very very good reason for not doing so Grin
I am only on How to Use Rootschat because i was looking for something that advises new members(and some not so new) what to use P.M for .Also what NOT to use them for. Before i ask for advice on a P.M. Haven't found anything yet Grin

Personal messages are usually used for information only of interest to or private to the two people involved.  One very specific use is to give someone your email address so that they can send you documents etc. They should not be used as an alternative to replying on a thread because there are frequently other people who have a watching interest in a thread and may later add useful information.

You just hit the nail on the head, thats what i wanted to ask advice about but not in public in case anyone gets in huff. Grin
I have quoted a shorted version of the above many times Grin
When i get requests on a P.M that i have to copy & paste on the topic that i have given information on.Because they reply on P.M. I Always explain  the main reason why i have done this, but there are other reasons.I did it a few days ago.

Celia      P.S i cant make up my mind which Mod to ask Undecided
