Exmouth?? Exworth?? Ixworth??
« on: Wednesday 21 September 05 07:38 BST (UK) »

Hi,

I need some information about place names in Suffolk. I am looking for my gg-grandfather William Plummer.  I have him living in Yorkshire in 1861:

William PLUMMER Head 31 Leather Skinner   Exmouth Suffolk
Court No 8 Oborne St Brightside Bierlow  Yorkshire
RG9 / 3495 / 64 / 4

and in 1871:

William PLUMBER Head Mar 41 Leather Dresser Suffolk Exworth
41 Mulberry Walk Leeds, Yorkshire, England
RG10 / 4547 / 63 / 33

As you can see, not only does the spelling of his name vary, but also has place of birth. I know of Ixworth in Suffolk, but does anyone know of Exmouth or Exworth?

Thanks for any advice,

PeterB

There is a small village just outside Bury St. Edmunds called ICKWORTH.

Thanks for that. I wonder what  Ickworth or Ixworth spoken with a Suffolk accent sounds like to a Yorkshire enumerator's ear? Although I'm sure the good folk of Suffolk speak without any accent - from their point of view.

Well I being a good ole "Sarfark" gal would prounounce ICKWORTH as

"ICKWUTH"

The same with IXWORTH, this would be "IXWUTH"

Hope you get the picture "bor"

It's almost certainly Ixworth. I have an Ann PLUMMER, born Ixworth in 1779. She married William WHITE in Ixworth in 1798. There were many PLUMMER families in Ixworth.
