Little Musgrave, Baptism
« on: Wednesday 21 September 05 08:19 BST (UK) »

Hi, Is there anyone can help me find a baptism record for a John Bailey or (Bayliff), born about 1870, in Little Musgrave, Westmorland, he was the son of William, a Joiner and Elizabeth, I have been really struggling on this family as there appears to be no birth certificates for the three children whom were all born in different counties, although I found John in the 1871 census aged 9 months, born Little Musgrave, Kirby Stephen, Can anyone help, please?, best wishes, Jean

Hi Jean
Was there a church in Little Musgrave?  It is a tiny place.  www.genuki.com will have details if there was.  I shall be in Kirkby Stephen at half term if that is helpful.   Have you tried writing to the local register office to ask for a search if you cannot find it on www.1837online?   As you know the date it might be worth a try.

The only John Bayliffe I can find in 1871 is age 1 and born in Crosby Ravensworth, son of Robert.    Found another one age 10 in 1881 son of William. so that is probably him but cannot find him in 1871!  Can you quote the reference and full entry including his parents and siblings?

Thanks Andrea, I believe the church was one that covered several parishes, as you say Little Musgrave was a very small place, I don't think any of the three children have a birth certificate, I have searched the indexes at my local records office and have found nothing, my only hope is that they were baptised, but as they were born in different places I wasn't sure where to start, but now I have found them in 1871 and it said John was born in Little Musgrave, 9 months before, I'm hoping I might his baptism there, I have found that the records are held at Kendal, so I am now planning a visit there in the near future, thanks for your reply, best wishes, Jean

Hi again Andrea, Just got your next message after I posted the first, this family have tried their best to evade me, in 1861, William is Bailey, born 1829 in Cartmel, a Carpenter, boarding with a family called Garlick, he is down as married, RG9/3960, East Ward page 15, I cannot find any trace of his wife Elizabeth, who was born in Whitehaven abt 1838, in 1871 I found Elizabeth with her sons in Little Musgrave, under the name Bell RG10/5270 Kirby Stephen, page 11, but can find no trace of William, in 1881 they are all together under the name Bayliff in Yorkshire in a place called Thorpe Audlin, William snr died in a accident on the Hull to Barnsley railway later that year and the two elder sons moved to Barton upon Irwell in Lancashire to work on the Manchester Ship Canal, in 1891 I found Elizabeth and John under Bailey, but in 1901  can find no trace of John, and Elizabeth seems to be a pauper in Hemsworth Workhouse, although if it is her she has put a few years on her age , any thoughts?, best wishes, Jean

I have looked at the local map and the church is in Great Musgrave.  I find these census records a bit confusing.  John Bell is 6 months if you look at the original 1871 image.  His mother's place of birth is not known. William is born Lancs Blackpool and Richard is born Cumberland Maryport.
In 1881 William the younger is not with them but now Richard is down as born Blackpool!
The records are at Kendal.  Do make sure you book a film reader and/or fiche though if you want to look at the films.  It is not a very big office.  You need identification to get a reader ticket too.

Hi Andrea, Thanks for the advice, I already have a reader ticket, but I will definately book a machine, as I will be travelling from Manchester. Each time I have found this family on another census, I've thought, great now I will be able to find them on other's, but it has not worked like that. Richard, the middle brother was my great grandfather, in 1901 and 1881 he was down as born, Blackpool, Lancs and my gran always said he was born there, William his elder brother was down as born in North Shields in the 1881, 91 & 1901 census and John was Little Musgrave, in 1871 , then Kirby stephen in 1881 and 1891, as I said I cannot find him in 1901. My mother says the two brothers, William and John, both died in accidents, William on a dredger and John was accidently shot, she was right about William, I just found his death in 1912, aged 46 and it was a dredger accident, but nothing on John. Someone kindly looked up William Snr on the 1841 census and found him living with his parents William and Eleanor Bayliffe, so something else for me to look up at Kendal, no sign of him in 1851, anyway thanks very much for the interest shown in my plight, best wishes, Jean  Ps In 1881 William, 1866, was a farm servant a couple of doors away
