I know I'm a bit late with this one, but I've only just read it. I went through the Rainhill census and what I discovered was that nearly all the women were married under thirty (probably post natal depression) or over 50 (menopausal, and after having dozens of kids, no money, maybe an abusive husband) so being classed as a lunatic was unforgivable as these women today would have proper medication and counselling to help them through their depression. Most of the men had professions, so I can only hazard a guess that they were stressed out with all the work trying to keep kith and kin together, or drink had got the better of them. It's hard to say, but it was very sad to see so many people in these institutions called lunatics because they had reached the end of their tether. I only found a Grt Grandaunt yesterday on 1891 censu whom I'd lost from 1881, she was in Barton Institution blind for 25 years. Very very sad as I had followed her life from being a young girl to end up thus. Su
