Woolton House, East Woodhay
« on: Wednesday 21 September 05 14:16 BST (UK) »

In 1881 Henry CARTER was living at Woolton Lodge, East Woodhay with his family.  His occupation is described as Head Gardener. Ref: RG11/1265  vol 5  page 60

I am interested to know who would have been the occupant of the "big house" at this time.  Was it called Woolton House?  I think I found an account of it burning down in recent years and a National Trust garden being established in the grounds.

I would be grateful for any information about the house and its occupants.

kind regards, Arranroots  Wink

Hi Arranroots

I've had a look at his neighbours of the time....but don't know if it helps!!........................the only big house with lots of servants housekeeper, footman, governess, lots of maids etc is on the same census image to Henry.

It's called Burley Lodge.

Thanks Sarah - I have access to the image (sorry for not making this clear!) but like you I am puzzled about which is the "big house"!

The name Lodge made me think of a dwelling belonging to the main house of the estate, but you may well be right.  I noticed that property next do the CARTERs is unoccupied, but surely there would have been servants in residence if THAT was it?

Thanks for looking!
